Van Cleef & Arpels were thinking of issuing a fragrance for discerning women with high-class taste who were enamored with their magnificent gem designs. At the time, no jewel brand had ever tried this, so this was a first. It was also a first in perfumery terms, as Jean Claude Ellena, the master perfumer who composed this truly timeless, romantic scent, chose to use the tangy touch of blackcurrant buds in order to add a lightly catty whiff to the blend. The note compliments the intensely floral heart and supports the fine base vibrating with a creamy, animalic piquancy. The name choice was therefore easy: First! And after all those years, no other perfume from a jeweler has taken that placement in our hearts...
