PENSACOLA, Fla. (WEAR) It's getting dark earlier, which mean more drivers are on the road at night.
A new study released by the American Automobile Association (AAA) shows that clouded headlights could be putting you at higher risk of being involved in a nighttime accident.
Cloudy headlights are caused over time by sunlight.
It damages the plastic coating of most headlights and ends up with a foggy, yellowish tint.
AAA says clouded headlights generate only 20 percent of the light that new headlights do.
Johnny Zogby has been restoring vehicle headlights for six years.
"I noticed it was so many cars that need it that I started doing it part-time. The thing I like most about doing headlights is that it makes people safer, it makes their ride look brand new," said I-10 Headlight Restoration owner Johnny Zogby.
Zogby says cleaning your headlights will make a big difference in visibility.
"You could be driving down the road and a little kid be on their bicycle on the side of the road too close and you may not even see them until you ride on them if your lights are faded like these," Zogby added.
According to AAA, on average, the condition of your headlights will begin to deteriorate between three to five years.
That's when they will begin to turn yellow and fog up.
"I'm just trying to save money, but I know I need to get on it," said Julie Pittman.
But there are some solutions.
AAA says drivers can replace their headlights with manufacturer's original parts or after-market headlight lenses.
They also say you can buff out headlights to get back about 70 percent of the original light.
"I heard that if you put toothpaste that'll do it, but I've been putting it off," said Pittman.
According to AAA, with 50 percent of accidents happening at night, headlights are an added danger.
AAA says if the bulb in your headlight is difficult to see, then more than likely it needs to be checked by an expert.
They also recommend when you get your oil changed, add headlight maintenance to that checklist of things to monitor.
